Community opposition from the outside

Biblical understanding for Chapter 4

  1. Form: Ridicule (4:1-3) →

  2. Form: Force (4:7-8) →

  3. Form: Discouragement- too much rubble & fear open to attack. (4:10-12)

  1. Response: Prayer v. 4-5; Determination of the people- "had a mind to work" v.6

  2. Response: Prayer and took their stand to protect God’s people v.9

  3. Response: Reorganization v.13; Call to faith “remember who God is and be faithful to His call- fight  v.14-15; Readiness vv.16- 23

Biblical understanding for Chapter 5

Form: Oppression by those who had power/ wealthy (5:1-19)→

  • Response: Righteous indignation vv.16-23(hate what God hates);

  • Response: Gracious Correction vv.7-13; Leaders called to repent. The result: repentant leaders & a healed community.

  • Response: Servant leader vv.14-18; 2 Set an example with his power & wealth.

  • Response: Prayer v.19 Requested God would recognize his service.

Theme: Spiritual Warfare

According to Exodus 28:1 and Exodus 15:20-21, who were Aaron and Miriam and what were their roles?

Read Numbers 12

  • Was Miriam’s accusation right, Numbers 9:14?

  • How is Moses character different than Miriam’s?

  • How does God explain that His relationship with Moses’ was different than a priest or prophetess? Why should Moses be respected?

  • What were the physical, relational, and spiritual consequences for a leper, Leviticus 13:46?

  • What was Moses’ response?

  • Moses responded by leaving the judgment to God and then pleaded for mercy on behalf of Miriam.

  • Share an example when someone made a personal attack against you.

  • Based on Moses’ response, how should you respond to personal attacks against you?

  • How does God respond to your sin against Him (John 3:16, Romans 5:8)?

  • How is Jesus a better intercessor than Moses (1John 2:1-2)?

  • How should we treat our enemies? (Matt. 5:44)
