SERMON NOTES

“Faith in the Fog” Matthew 1:18-25

  1. God’s activity and Joseph’s Fog

  • God’s Activity: God brings about the fulfillment of the promised eternal King and Savior through the genesis of Jesus.

  • Joseph’s fog: Joseph’s purpose and desire reveal that he was both a righteous and a gracious person.

  • If you seek God like Joseph by doing what is right and being gracious then you can trust him to bless you with a greater faith through the struggle.

  1. God’s revelation reveals the way

  • King- son of David: Joseph’s decision would confirm or deny Jesus’ connection to fulfilling the Davidic covenant that Jesus is the eternal King. (His heritage reckoned through the father.)

  • Savior, Jesus (God saves)- “son of God”: Conception by the Holy Spirit fulfilled the Abrahamic promise of blessing to the nations, which was the forgiveness of sins. (Reckoned through the Holy Spirit confirmed by the virgin conception.)

  • Two Part Confirmation:

    • Wed mary (king) results in becoming the “son of David” by adoption.

    • Name the child Jesus (savior) pointing to the fact that God will save his people through Jesus.

  • Nature of Jesus’ Mission

    • Incarnation (God in human flesh) brings

    • Salvation (God with us, dies for us)

  • Nature of our Mission

    • The Holy Spirit in us (calls us to incarnational ministry of suffering for others) brings

    • Proclamation of salvation

  1. Joseph’s Faith

  • Confirmed heritage of God (royal son of God) by the virgin conception.

  • Confirmed heritage from David (royal son of David) by Joseph wedding Mary and adopting Jesus.

  • Obedience increases faith

    • A child of the king by grace through faith

    • On mission as a result of God with us and in us (the Holy Spirit)

SIMPLIFY FAMILY WORSHIP

worship.bible.pray

Worship. You can read a Psalm, something worshipful from Scripture, or play a song on an instrument or something you have recorded.

The Bible. Is the centerpiece of family worship. Read a passage of appropriate length for your family. Start by reading Bible stories about people or one of the Gospel’s. For kids, you may want to break these stories into parts. Have someone retell the story in their own words. Ask your family some simple questions like, 1) Who is this written to?, 2) What is the main point? 3) What is this passage teaching about God and people? 4) How can I apply this to my life specifically? How can you encourage each other to obey the message? Encourage one another to retell the story to others that week and next meeting share how people responded.

Pray. Be brief, praise God, pray for someone else to come to faith in Christ, and pray for one another.

“Keep it simple and keep it up!”
