Colossians Series Sermon #6

Group Question (Ice Breaker)

  • One or two people in the group share a story of when they felt like they had gone from childhood to becoming an adult. Was it a positive or negative experience?

Into the Bible Questions: Be conformed to the image of Christ- What does that mean? -

  • READ Romans 8:29- 30 and 2 Corinthians 3:17- 18
  • READ Galatians 5:22- 24 The Fruit of the Spirit is a result of you surrendering in obedience to Christ and being empowered by His Spirit. Spiritual fruit seen in your behavior patterns shows the image of Christ being formed in you.
  • Jesus seemed to make a hard task of obeying the Old Testament Law even harder in (read) Mathew 5:20- 48 as He calls us to "be perfect." -
  • Yet Peter, who denied he knew Jesus as Jesus went to the cross, found salvatoin and was made a leader. Paul, who persecuted the church and approved of the murder of Stephen in Acts 7- 8, was chosen as Christ's sent one to the non-Jews.
  • READ Philippians 1:6 Trust Jesus in your day to day experiences and relationships to finish what He started.

Application Questions

  • Since Christ saved you by His power, and now is cleansing you for His power and by His power in you, how does this change the way you view your potential to become obedient to what seemed like the impossible in Mathew 5:20- 48?
  •  Practical: One way the Lord cuts out the non-fruit producing behaviors in our life is by being honest with ourselves and others. To do this, intentionally this week look to start regular Christ-centered relationships where you give others permission to speak into your life. God uses others to point out where we can increasingly trust Jesus at His word. (see John 15 and James 5:16)
