“An Unexpected King” Matthew 2:1-12

  1. Whose king is this?
    • King of the Jews
    • A king in conflict
    • King of the outsiders
  2. Why search for the king?

    • Herod's search

    • The wise men's search

    • Our Search

  3. Who will you exalt and obey as your king?

Exalt and obey Jesus as your Shepherd, Savior and King.

I remember being a kid and showing our kids “A Charlie Brown Christmas” where everyone lost sight of the meaning of Christmas. In frustration, Charlie Brown said, “I guess I don’t know what Christmas is all about.” And screamed, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” This is where his buddy Linus began quoting Luke 2.

Have someone in the family or multiple people take turns reading from  Luke 2:1-20 .

  • Ask: “In v. 11 who did the angel say was being born?”

  • Ask: “Why do you think Jesus came into the world?” (see vv. 11 & 14)

  • Say: “God became flesh and announced it to shepherds rather than royalty. God became flesh and was placed in a feeding bucket for animals rather than a royal crib.”

  • Ask: “Who did Jesus come to bring salvation and peace? Who can you share this Good News with today?”

  • Ask: “In v.20 how did the shepherds react to finding out that the angel’s news was true?”

  • Read John 3:16. “God gave himself to save us. Share one way Jesus is your greatest gift.”

Prayer: Give God for the gift of Jesus!
