SERMON: "Five Keys to Being a Growing, Maturing Christian" by Dr. Lonnie Wascom

Text:John 15:1-17

John 15 is Jesus' teaching that focuses on what it takes to be a growing, maturing disciple. He gives at least five keys:

Key#1 Bear Fruit (Good fruit from the Holy Spirit Galatians 5:22-24)

Key #2 Abide in Christ

Key #3 Pray

Key #4 Obey Jesus

Key#5 Know and Love Jesus

"If you know Jesus, you will love Jesus, and if you love Jesus you will obey Jesus, and if you obey Jesus you will abide in Jesus, and if you abide in Jesus you will bear fruit (good spiritual fruit- cf. Galatians 5)."

DEVOTIONAL: personal and group

Text: John 15:26-16:15

“What was the Helper, the Holy Spirit, sent to help us with and are we doing it?”

S.P.E.C.K.A. Bible Devotional Approach

Sin to confess: Is there a sin I need to confess or avoid?

Promise to claim: Is there a promise I need to believe and claim for my life?

Example to follow: Is there an example I can follow or avoid?

Command to obey: Is there a command in this text to obey?

Knowledge to understand: Is there knowledge about God or how he works?

Application to make: What will I do in response to what I have learned?

How to use S.P.E.C.K.A.

Personally: Read the whole text, then ask each SPECKA question, re-read the text and answer each question.
Growth Groups: In Bible time, share what you’ve learned. Hold each other accountable to the Application. Weekly, share the text with an outsider and share their response with your Growth Group.
