“Preparing for Forgiveness” Matthew 26:1-35

Understanding the need for forgiveness

  • We all have plotted to kill Jesus through our sin.

  • Don’t give up on forgiveness.

  • We have all fallen away, but Jesus will forgive and restore us if by faith we return to Him.

Understanding the power of forgiveness

  • Understand your great need for forgiveness and the great cost of forgiveness then you will experience the power of forgiveness.

  • The result forgiveness is a life of extravagant worship!

Understanding the cost of forgiveness

  • The passover (Lord’s Supper) celebration helps us understand the purpose of Jesus death.

  • Understand, believe, receive and live in forgiveness.

DEVOTIONAL: personal and group

Theme: Forgiveness

Read: Exodus 12:1-13

  • Vv.1-2 Through passover, God forgave Israel’s sin by the blood of an unblemished lamb. Also their new calendar life began on that day. How is this similar to what happens to a person on the day they believe in Jesus as their Passover Lamb?

  • Vv. 3-6 Jewish families would select a young lamb and watch over it to make sure it was unblemished. The kids would often treat it like pet and friend, before sacrificing its’ life for theirs, as forgiveness of their sins.

  • How do you think Jesus’ disciples who were his close friends felt when he died for them?

  • How would this cause you to think differently about your past sins and future actions?

  • How does this impact the way you understand John 15:12-17?

  • Vv.7-13 In light of how the passover was carried out, how would your family think about God’s judgement, their sins, and God’s forgiveness?

  • Read Ephesians 4:32. How does Jesus sacrifice affect your view on forgiveness?
